Level 5 | From Compliance to Connection: Positive Psychology Strategies for Lasting Change in Diabetes Care
Join us on September 14th, 2026, at 11:30 am PST, for the 2026 webinar update
People living with diabetes are often well informed about actions needed to shift into a “healthy lifestyle”, yet often struggle to sustain health behaviors over time. This webinar introduces a positive psychology lens for diabetes care, showing how clinicians can help individuals with diabetes build lifestyles that feel psychologically nourishing, not just medically correct. Rather than focusing solely on risk and problem-solving, we’ll explore how to weave well-being, motivation, and strengths into everyday diabetes education and support.
Drawing on the PERMA framework—Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment—participants will learn practical strategies to enhance motivation, resilience, and self-management. We’ll examine how PERMA aligns with key behavior-change principles such as autonomy, connection, and confidence-building, and translate these ideas into simple questions, reframes, and counseling approaches that can be used immediately in healthcare professionals’ practice.
Course Topics:
- Understanding PERMA and its relevance to sustainable health behaviors in diabetes
- Connecting PERMA with Self-Determination Theory to deepen motivation and self-management
- Applying PERMA-based strategies and questions in everyday diabetes education and coaching.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Explain how positive psychology complements traditional diabetes education by focusing on flourishing, resilience, and sustainable behavior change rather than solely addressing deficits or clinical outcomes.
- Apply the PERMA framework (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment) as a practical tool to support nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and diabetes self-management behaviors in clinical practice.
- Identify evidence-based strategies and coaching prompts informed by positive psychology and Self-Determination Theory that make healthy lifestyle behaviors more enjoyable, meaningful, strengths-based, and socially supported, thereby increasing their sustainability.
What's Included:
- 1.5 CE credits (AMA PRA Category 1™, ACPE, ANCC, CDR accredited)
- On-demand course with video presentation, podcast, and downloadable resources
